Yoga by the ocean, a 5* hotel, spa treatments, delicious food and wine – is a luxury yoga retreat right for you?
A yoga retreat doesn’t necessarily mean you have to deprive yourself of the simple pleasures in life. In fact, practicing in a serene luxurious environment can help improve your state of mind and relaxation. And this goes hand-in-hand with the powerful practice of yoga.
Lanzarote in the Canary Islands Spain is blessed with sunshine year-round and has a peaceful laid-back feeling – perfect for a luxury yoga retreat and a warm weather break from the cold winter months. Yoga Escapes hosts a yoga retreat in Lanzarote in February every year and combines just the right mix of yoga, luxury, free time, and a relaxed holiday feel. It’s a great way to spoil yourself at a beautiful 5* hotel by the ocean with some exceptional yoga classes.
Escaping to the sunny Canary Islands in the middle of winter is truly blissful, and practicing yoga by the ocean at a luxury hotel is a real treat, but what makes these yoga holidays even more special are the connections and the bonds that are created during the week with like-minded yogis – that’s something that stays with you long after you return home. That’s a real luxury in a time when many of us are craving meaningful conversations and genuine relationships.
As one of Yoga Escapes’ repeat yogis Lynne says: “You are creating communities of like-minded people from all over the world. We come together for a week of fun and yoga practice and emerge a bonded, loving band of friends. This is something extraordinary.”
Lynne continues “We arrive to the yoga retreat feeling a bit tired, a bit stressed, in need of a break from everyday chores and to-do lists, and some of us in much need of a physical re-set. And we leave refreshed, energized, serene, strong, calm, and with a new support group of friends”.
The yoga is 5 star, as is the hotel, but so is the holiday experience. Two hosts from Yoga Escapes join every yoga retreat to make sure everything is taken care of. It’s a truly personalized break, and that is all part of the luxury as well – having someone take care of everything for you on holiday!
Lanzarote Canary Islands Yoga Retreat: 17-24 February 2024
Here’s a sneak peek of what to expect on a yoga retreat in Lanzarote Spain with Yoga Escapes.
Yoga twice a day with ocean views
There are two yoga classes a day – a strong morning Vinyasa flow class from 8:30-10am, and an afternoon slower Yin yoga class from 5-6pm. Both classes are suitable for all yoga levels from beginners to experienced yoga teachers. The yoga teacher modifies the classes and poses for all yoga levels so you can practice at your own pace and be challenged when you need it, or focus on getting the basics right if you’re just starting out. All with gorgeous views out to the ocean and with the backdrop of the sound of the waves.
The morning Vinyasa flow classes are quite active, while the afternoon Yin yoga classes are slow and with deep stretching. All of them are optional, you can join them all or take a break whenever you like if you’re feeling tired, nobody judges. The yoga teacher is there to give you advice and tips on how to improve your practice, modify poses if you have an injury or are just not very flexible, or walk you through how to get into that headstand or that wheel you’ve been wanting to try!
Rather than offering a series of stand-alone yoga classes every day, this yoga retreat is more of a week-long course to help you progress your yoga practice to the next level. The yoga teacher starts everyone out at the same base level and then builds one class onto the next, carrying forward the learnings from one day to the next. You’ll gain a deeper understanding of how to do the poses correctly and proper alignment, practice correct breathing as you flow from one pose to the next, learn a bit of yoga philosophy to keep things interesting, with moments of stillness and meditation to quiet the mind. The Yoga Escapes teachers always inject a bit of playfulness and light-heartedness to keep the classes fun.
At the end of the week, you’ll leave the yoga retreat having learned a set of yoga tools and practical tips to help you continue your yoga practice after the retreat, as well as the motivation to get back onto the mat at home or in your local yoga studio. And you’ll also return home feeling more grounded and serene.
A stunning modern 5* hotel right on the coast
Yoga Escapes also loves to spoil you on their yoga holidays! The 5* Secrets Lanzarote Hotel & Spa where the retreat is located is divine. The team has been hosting luxury yoga retreats in Lanzarote at this hotel for several years, and after researching practically all the 5* hotels in the Canary Islands, they fell in love with this one and keep coming back.
The views out to the ocean, the feeling of peace and calm, the modern sleek look, the adults-only vibe, the stroll into town at sunset along the promenade by the ocean, the large modern seaview rooms, the delicious food, four outdoor pools, and several ocean-view spots to get away from it all with a book – it’s all beautiful.
You’ll also be tempted to spoil yourself at the hotel’s gorgeous spa in between yoga classes. There are all sorts of massages, facials and body scrubs, there’s a wonderful thalasso-therapy indoor pool circuit with jets and a jacuzzi, sauna, steam room and Turkish baths to help relax your muscles after yoga – all highly recommended.
The Secretes Lanzarote hotel is located in the high-end resort of Puerto Calero on the south-east part of the island – the most upscale part of Lanzarote with a lovely marina and promenade filled with seaside cafés and restaurants. The hotel is right on the coast in a quiet area, but just a ten-minute walk into the marina town. The hotel was completely renovated a couple of years ago so everything is new and refurbished in a contemporary design.
Explore beautiful Lanzarote in between yoga classes
Lanzarote is a naturally beautiful island, with dormant volcanoes and moon-like landscapes, gorgeous beaches, a national park, and charming towns. Unlike its neighboring islands, it doesn’t have high-rise buildings, and has maintained a more sophisticated feel.
Yoga Escapes organizes a day trip for the yoga group to the stunning Playa Papagayo beach during the week. You’ll get a chance see one of the most beautiful beaches in the Canary Islands, swim in clear blue water, go kayaking, or spend the day relaxing with a book with views out to the ocean. Lanzarote has some other lovely beaches as well which you’ll get to explore during the week – Playa Flamingo in the south, Playa las Cucharasa a bit further up the coast, and Playa de los Pocillos not far from the hotel.
It’s your yoga holiday
The yoga week focuses around the yoga classes, but it is also a proper holiday. Rather than spending all your time in a secluded retreat-type venue, the Yoga Escapes team encourages you to explore the island, take in the culture, taste the delicious food, chat with the locals, learn about the history, art, music.
In addition to visiting the island’s beautiful beaches, you can also rent bikes, or hike along the coast near the hotel, go kitesurfing or diving. While some people are perfectly happy relaxing at the pool or by the ocean at the hotel. Having some quiet time alone is also important and there’s plenty of free time to do whatever you prefer.
Another perk of this luxury yoga retreat is the really good food! From Spanish tapas to paella and an array of delicious Mediterranean dishes, all super fresh and healthy. You’ll get to try different restaurants in various towns – Puerto Calero, Playa Blanca, Puerto del Carmen. You can eat and drink what you like including fish and meat, there are no restrictions and no rules, you can have coffee, tea, wine – it’s all part of enjoying the local culture and the holiday. Yoga Escapes are nonetheless very considerate about people’s dietary needs and make sure there are options for everyone. So you’ll always have plenty of delicious meals if you are vegan, vegetarian, gluten-free, dairy-free, or have any other dietary preference.
February is warm and sunny in Lanzarote and a lovely time to explore the island without all the crowds. Laura from Yoga Escapes travels with the group along with the yoga teacher and she takes care of all the logistics and plans group dinners and day trips. You’ll have a personal concierge on site so you can sit back and enjoy the yoga and the sunshine. Now that’s luxury!
