Mykonos has over 20 gorgeous beaches – to highlight the best is a real challenge!
We’ve been hosting yoga retreats in Mykonos for years now and have had the pleasure to visit most of the beaches on the island – we’ll be happy to take you around and show you the best Mykonos beaches to fit your mood.
In the meantime, here’s our recommendation on 5 Mykonos beaches we think are definitely worth visiting. There’s one for everyone – it just depends what you’re looking for.
Many of them are organized with sunbeds and umbrellas, beach bars, restaurants and water sports, and many of those are found on the southern coast. But if you venture a little further away, you’ll find the less touristy beaches, each one unique and beautiful in its own way.
5 beautiful Mykonos beaches:
Psarou
This is definitely the jet setters beach where you’re likely to spot a celebrity or two coming off their yacht, lounging on the posh Nammos sunbeds with a glass of pink champagne and sushi. Despite the scene, it is very a pretty beach, not too large, with deep green blue waters, a traditional taverna, and wonderful laid-back music to keep you relaxed for the day. Until the party starts.
Usually in high season and on the weekends, at about 5 or 6pm, Nammos restaurant at Psarou beach becomes a party scene with people dancing freely on the tables to the latest summer hits. It’s worth the experience, if you’re lucky enough to get a table. And if not, join the rest of the glamour on the beach with a swim at sunset. If you want to see and be seen, this is the beach for you.
Panormos
One of the more chilled-out beaches in Mykonos, very popular with the jet-set crowd due to the Principote beach club scene. Panormos is a great place to people-watch, surrounded by beautiful beach bodies with large designer sunglasses.
The end of the beach has no umbrellas and no beach chairs – the perfect balance if you feel like a little bit of both.
Agios Sostis
Expansive wild beach on the northern side of the island, also without umbrellas nor sunbeds – just you and nature, sand, sea and sun. The wind can get quite strong here, so be sure to go when the northern winds are calm, and you’ll be in for a real treat. The bustling nightlife of Mykonos will seem miles away, there’s plenty of space for everyone to find their spot on the sand, and the distance from the road and lack of beach bars means there’s a peaceful silence all along the beach.
After a day on this paradise beach, head over to Kiki’s taverna just next door – a little gem owned by two delightful brothers, with a beautiful view and a magical feeling. This cozy authentic taverna has been there forever, but only those in the know can find it – there’s no sign, barely any electricity, and serves delicious grilled meats, fish and fresh salads. A must.
Kalo Livadi
Kalo Livadi is one of the prettiest and larger beaches on Mykonos, catering to a mix of families, couples, and groups of friends alike. Everyone seems to fit in and find their own space. There are plenty of beach chairs, and the beach itself is quite long and wide, making it feel less crowded than many of the other beaches.
The water here is spectacular, and if you’re a swimmer, this is where you can enjoy laps without constantly bumping into a random floating tourist. And when you’re done swimming, you can splurge on a fantastic massage under your umbrella, or wander over to Sol y Mar for some food and a late afternoon beach party with great music.
Fokos
If you want to get away from it all, Fokos is the ideal beach for a real break. Off the beaten track and reachable only by car or taxi, it’s quite an adventure to get to, but once you’re there, you’ll be glad you came. Somewhat small, not crowded, very secluded and far away from the busy streets of Mykonos town, it has a feeling of peace and tranquility.
No sunbeds nor umbrellas, so avoid the hot midday hours by having lunch at the wonderful taverna on the beach – the best kept dining secret on the island with amazing home-cooked meals and tasty dishes. One of the lesser know beaches, most tourists will never see Fokos, but those that do will love it.
And many more beaches to pick from…
These are just a few of our favorite Mykonos beaches, but if you have time and want to explore further, you can venture to Super Paradise where the beach seems split along a dividing line. Watch the young party crowd go crazy on one end of the beach, while the upscale gay crowd enjoy their cocktails and drag queen shows on the other side of the beach – two of the many sides of Mykonos.
Other options include Ftelia beach – very popular with kitesurfers and can get quite windy, but is heavenly on a still day. Agios Ioannis is a small peaceful beach great for families, with fantastic sunset views. Elia beach is long and wide with gorgeous water – the perfect place for long walks along the shore. If you’re into the party mood, check out Paradise and Paranga beaches. If you prefer to explore more quite beaches, then Lia and Agrari are worth a visit.
We’ll take you to any you want to explore during our Mykonos luxury yoga retreats – we know them all well and will be more than happy to show you around. They are all special in their own way, and with so many to choose from, you’ll definitely want to come back!
