Escape to pure yoga bliss in Egypt!
We had an absolutely fantastic yoga retreat in Egypt at the gorgeous 5* beach resort of Soma Bay – what a perfect way to escape the dark winter and jump into full sunshine and clear blue sea.
There are not many places close to Europe that offer warm weather and sunshine all year round, and what better way to escape the winter than to practice yoga outdoors near a beautiful beach.
The 5* hotel, the small group, the wonderful yoga classes, the white beach, the delicious food, the large seaview rooms, and the superb customer service – everything was done with such care.
Our Egypt Luxury Yoga Holiday:
Soma Bay on the Red Sea – perfect for upscale travelers.
Soma Bay is still somewhat undiscovered, the people who visit are mostly discerning upscale tourists looking for a bit of peace and quiet on a lovely beach. The perfect location for our Egypt yoga retreat.
It was highly recommend to us by our international Egyptian friends living abroad, and they were right. We’ll let the others go to crowded Sharm el-Sheikh and touristy Hurghada, and we’ll treat ourselves to real luxury in Soma Bay, where life moves at a slow pace and everything seems to be just right. Imagine long white sandy beaches, crystal clear blue water, not a cloud in the sky, impeccable 5* customer service, delicious healthy food, and a real feeling of true relaxation. And all just a short flight from Europe.
The gorgeous 5* Kempinski Hotel – best way to spoil ourselves.
We stayed at the 5* Kempinski hotel right on the beach – if you’re looking for true luxury, then this is the place. It’s the best hotel in Soma Bay and in fact voted the best hotel on the Red Sea in Egypt.
Large rooms with views out to sea, a series of lagoons and pools leading down to a lovely private beach with large comfy sunbeds, excellent service, fantastic restaurants, and everything is provided with a smile. The staff is great, and nothing is ever too much.
Yoga classes by the sea – such a treat.
And what a wonderful place to practice yoga – we held our yoga classes in a covered wooden shala just steps from the sea. We had two yoga classes a day, a Vinyasa flow class from 8:30-10am and an afternoon restorative yoga class from 4-5pm.
The yoga classes were taught by our fantastic Tania Brown, a top yoga teacher from London. Tania led us into bliss every day, challenging us in the morning with energetic sun salutations and strong poses, and encouraging us to melt away in the evening with long deep stretches during our Yin yoga classes at sunset. This was the perfect setting for our yoga holiday, with views out to sea and a feeling of peace and stillness.
Massages and sunbathing, snorkeling and sailing.
And in between yoga classes we relaxed on the beach, spoiled ourselves with massages and facials at the Cascades Spa (ranked #1 in Egypt), enjoyed thalasso-therapy treatments and jet massages, some of us went diving while others went snorkeling on a reef right off the beach. And for the more adventurous and energetic – there was golfing, tennis, sailing and kitesurfing right by the hotel.
Life in Soma Bay is easy, and everything is carefully planned to help you de-stress. The only worry we had was getting to the beach in time to secure front row sunbeds. But by the second day, our new best friend the sunbed-towel man made sure the yoga group was all set in the front row for the rest of the week! So no more worries.
Wonderful meals and great company.
And in the evenings after our soothing sunset yoga class, we had dinner all together over delicious healthy food and a nice glass of wine. The waiters and staff loved us, we got preferential treatment every time, had lots of laughs, and celebrated two birthdays in the group during the week – so plenty of cake, candles and singing to go around!
Perhaps it was the small group dynamic, perhaps it was Tania’s wonderful yoga classes by the sea, perhaps it was the sunshine and color of the sea, the glass of wine and the great company, or a combination of all of these things – but it was indeed a memorable yoga week. And we can’t wait to go back for another week of yoga and sun in Soma Bay!
